"A Place at the Table"
On November 1, 2013, significant cuts were made to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which reduced food assistance benefits for more than 46 million Americans. Because of these cuts, we are expecting an unprecedented need for food assistance in our community during the holidays, as well as an overall increase in reliance on our Community Kitchen and Emergency Food Pantry. With this in mind, we have set unprecedented goals for ourselves during this year’s Thanksgiving celebration so that, through us working together as a neighborhood, we might provide every one of our neighbors in need a place at our table:
•Together, we will collect enough fresh produce, turkeys, and canned goods to provide Thanksgiving meals for 425 families in our community.
•Together, we will prepare a place at the table for 150 individuals from our neighborhood to share a holiday feast together.
•Together, we will raise $50,000 to increase the capacity of our Community Kitchen in 2014 and help offset the effects of the federal SNAP cuts on our community. So far, we’ve raised more than $12,000 to provide food assistance for families in Camden – click here to donate and help us reach our goal!
These goals are ambitious, but we are an amazing neighborhood and, by working together, we are more than capable of exceeding these goals to build a solid foundation for food security in Bergen Square.
